Wedding Photo

Originally posted April 30, 2011

This grainy photo of my parents wedding back in 1951. They were leaving this quaint New England white clapboard church on their way to their honeymoon. The little church sits on the shore of Portsmouth Harbor which makes for a picturesque exit from the sanctuary.

They always took us on road trips to Maine and would "short cut" us to go by this pretty chapel. This isn't quite Westminster Abbey but I bet they had a similar feel to as William and Kate had as they exited the cathedral. Below is a photo of the 1st Congregational Church in Kittery Point, Maine as it stands today.

No matter what I did today I did not succeed in creating a wedding free zone.
I'll make an exception for your photo even although I was still at school in 1951.

How lovely that they wanted to return regularly to the chapel where they were married. Westminster Abbey or the village church, it doesn't matter to the happy couple.

Lovely! The church looks like the perfect place for a wedding. It's also quite old by US standards. Westminster Abby is about 500 years older - and took 500 years to build. This lovely little piece of Americana was probably raised on a Saturday and open for church on Sunday.
Love the little New England white chapels. This one is lovely.
What a pretty place for a wedding. Who needs Westminster abbey!

I do love weddings, regardless of whose they are, as long as there is love. :-)

That looks like a romantic place for a wedding.

A nice little chapel for sure. A contrast in this with its quaintness to the magnificent cathedral we watched yesterday but the adoration of the couple for each other is the same.

PS how did you get your fox so rainbowed? I am always intrigued with your fox displays.

Thanks Pat. I use this fox in many of my banners. I have a permanent cut out of him. I used an effect on picnik.com to create that rainbow shining effect. certain effects are free others you have to get the "premium" version. I'm to cheap for that. Thanks so much for all your nice comments and visits to my crazy blog.

Honestly, I'd rather be married there than Westminster Abbey.

Sixty years later, you can still almost feel the excitement your parents were feeling when that photograph was taken. It's a great photo and the church is lovely.

It may not be Westminster Abbey but it seems set in far more natural beauty than the Abbey is.

What a lovely place to be married...and I much prefer the smaller, less ostentatious weddings.

Your mother sure looks happy! It almost looks as if she is dancing. A great picture!

I agree with Peter -- your mother looks especially happy. It looks like a big step (literally and figuratively!).
I love the white clapboard churches of New England.

I have included a video of Kate going down the aisle with her father this week. I'll bet your parents felt as privileged in that white clapboard church.
