Mr. Marathon

The Sepia Saturday prompt reminded me of some sort of a race. The photo is very timely as Monday April 15, 2013 is the 117th running of the Boston Marathon. The runner in the photo below is probably the best known Boston Marathoner, Johnny Kelly.

A legend of the marathon, Kelley won the 1935 and 1945 runnings of the Boston Marathon. He finished in second place at Boston a record seven times. Between 1934 to 1950, he finished in the top five 15 times at Boston, consistently running in the 2:30s. He ran his last full marathon at Boston in 1992 at the age of 84, his 61st start and 58th finish there. For two more years he ran the last seven miles.

A member of the U.S. Olympic Team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, he finished 18th in the marathon.

Kelley ran his 50th Boston Marathon in 1981; the event was also his 108th career marathon.

In 1993, a statue of Kelley to commemorate him was erected in Newton, Massachusetts, on the Boston Marathon course, one hill and about one mile prior to the foot of Heartbreak Hill.

Good luck to all the runners this year. Amazing to still be running marathons at 84.. just goes to prove that if you don't want to lose it you have to use it!

I don't know why, but the comment box didn't appear when I used your link to read your post. Eventually got it by clicking different tabs on top.

Kelley sure had an impressive record.

I am always amazed at people who can do at 84 what I have never been able to do ever.

Oh dear, this one didn't turn out so well, but your post will be a monument to the ones that did.
