Horse Hair II

Image
If this post looks familiar to some of you, it's not deja vu, it's a repost. It was last posted March 9, 2012 and coincidently the Sepia Saturday prompt must have had some hair in it. When I saw this week's prompt I had to bring this photo out again. It's good for a laugh at least! :)

This photo shows myself and my friend "Old Blue" in 1979. (I'm the hairy one on the right) At the time I was attending West Virginia Wesleyan College and very far from my New England home. The friends I made there took me in as though I were one of their own family.

One of my fraternity brothers, Benji,  lived off campus at his home in the very rural City of Buckhannon, in Upshur County. His family kept horses and when I visited we would go riding through the many trails behind the ranch. "Old Blue" was my favorite horse and the feeling was mutual.
Every time she saw me approaching she would come galloping across the fields to say "hello" to me. Of course …

Important Practice

This week's Thursday Challenge is "important." An important practice is recycling. This sculpture entitled "Recap," was created by the students of of the James Otis School in East Boston. They collected over 680 lbs of these plastic bottle caps throughout the city. How's that for a creative reuse?

Kids on a Bed

Image
Sometimes one has to go to the "archives" to fulfill the Sepia Saturday challenge. My sisters hate when I do that. But this one is a great match with the prompt this week.

This is my older sister and younger sister with me on my bed. Yes, I'm that troubled middle child with the big smile, proud of his new little sister. I treasure this photo because it shows the close sibling bond the three of us had and continue to have to this day.

I also treasure this photo because it shows the stuffed animals I used to have. I can still clearly remember my favorite. It was the teddy bear in the upper right corner. I think I had him the longest of all my stuffed animals.

Everything I had, had to have the color red in it.  I loved that color so much. Looking through the old albums I am wearing a lot of red clothing! Notice the bright red blanket on my bed. It was my favorite blanket and I hated giving it up. Ironically, this early set of family photos where shot with slide film and hav…

Boston Common

These flags are displayed each year on Boston Common, during Memorial Day weekend, to honor the approximately 30,000 Massachusetts lives lost in war since the Civil War.

This week's Thursday Challenge is "many." I think this photo fulfils this challenge. Sometimes there's too many...

The Latest Fashions in Beach Wear

Image
The latest fashions in beach wear 102 years ago that is!
Can you imagine going to the beach with a full length skirt and all the other accoutrements that women had to wear a century ago? (I'm not up on what women were wearing then) It must have been strifling sitting in the hot sun with that get up. I see some of the ladies have sun umbrella. Even men had to wear full length suits.

The card shows many people quite a distance out in the ocean. There is a sandbar off of Plum Island that is very tempting to wade out to at low tide. But when the tide comes in you better have some good swimming skills because there are some nasty under tows all along the island. It's best to leave the sand bars early, before the water rises, especially if you are swimming in a full suit of clothes.

The back side of the card has a nice simple message:

Oct 29, 1912
Dear Florence,
Your letter came to-night - crossed my card.We will be glad to see you both Friday. Semard is "dressing up" to make…

Steamed Commuters

Image
Doesn't this massive steam locomotive look out of place on this delicate looking steel girder bridge? This is what is possibly the last passenger trail to Marblehead, Massachusetts. I've been able to nail down the date to 1956 as it was the last year they ran P2 locomotives. It's possible the photographer knew this was the end of the steam era and the last run on the line as the engine is perfectly shot and framed on the bridge.
The Marblehead branch was a very short line that diverted east just north of the Swampscott station for about 4 miles to Marblehead. It also rejoined the same line just south of Salem and formed a bit of a triangle.
In the 50's ridership was low due to new highways into Boston. The B&M railroad also was in some financial difficulty and was looking to dump a few of their short branches. The Marblehead branch abandonment was due to the later.

Today the Texaco gas station is gone, the trains are gone, and even the steel girder that once supp…

A Scandal in the Courtyard

Image
Missing in the first photo is a statue that was intended to be there all along. Considered scandalous by some in its time, the weathered bronze figure you see in the lower photo, was intended to be a gift from the architect McKim to the Boston Public Library in memory of his wife in 1896. Because the statue was of a nude figure holding an infant, The Woman's Christian Temperance Union caused a public outcry citing its "drunken indecency." The library had to refuse the gift, and McKim gave the statue to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It was later bequeathed to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

The statue Bacchante and Infant Faun in the Boston Public Library courtyard is a copy of the original. She was finally placed where she was intended to be in 2000.  She seems to be blocking the sunlight from her eyes.
