Valley View

Image
This week's Sepia Saturday prompt shows an ocean view. (see below) I'll match that with a valley view of the winding Deerfield River in Massachusetts. Here we have an antique postcard that was found in my grandmother's old desk. She had a number of postcards purchased from a number of places that she never sent.

Both shots are taken from Whitcomb summit of the Mohawk Trail. In a previous post I described a hairpin turn on the Mohawk Trail. Whitcomb summit used to have a massive wooden tower from which one could view the beautiful Deerfield River valley below. There was once a little gift shop there and perhaps this very card was purchased in that shop. You can also see the statue of a bronze elk in both shots. The elk statue was placed there by the Benevolent Order of Elks of Massachusetts. It's now protected by a little iron fence.

The old tower was scraped a few years ago when it was deemed unsafe due to the deterioration of the wooden structure. The lower photo was …

Fans

Image
Did anyone say "fans?" They are pictured in the Sepia Saturday prompt. (below) Pictured here are "fans" watching a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

Any "fan" of baseball and baseball stadiums will note that the bullpens you would see today are not evident in this photo. Also "fans" of an overflow crowd are allowed to sit on the field of the rather large outfield back in the year of 1930. Also pictured are the three outfielders positioned very close to the overflow crowd.

It must have been a little tricky trying to field a fly balls deep to center field!

Lost Jobs - Letter Writers

Image
Imagine that, they actually wrote to customers by hand. Look how big that room is, filled with employees busily writing letter,  somewhere in Chicago the headquarters of Sears Roebuck & Co.
Most communication nowadays is done electronically via email. If you should receive a letter from a business it isn't even signed. It's simply printed and spit out into an envelope postage is calculated and stamped, and it's sorted into zipcodes before its touched by human hands.
Good luck finding a handwritten letter from a business now. That job is completely lost! This photo however matches the Sepia Saturday prompt below, check it out. To find many more letter writers click here for Sepia Saturday.

Do Not Remove the Newspapers!

Image
This week's Sepia Saturday prompt we see a woman and a newspaper. Here we find the original location of Boston Public Library's newspaper reading room. Check out how many newspapers they kept there. It must have been quite a job keeping all those papers updated and catalogued.
But do you see a woman in that photo? Not really. Perhaps a few women worked in this reading room helping to find newspapers from library users.
Look carefully at the sign in the photo. They actually reserved a table for women here. Those women must have been trouble makers because the sign also reminds them not to remove the papers. It must be true then, as the old proverb says, "a women unemployed is thinking of mischief."

Today the newspaper reading room is in another part of the building and is much smaller. The old reading room has been converted into a space for private functions. The photo was shot from the opposite corner of the previous photo's camera position.
