Station Art
MBTA Commuter Rail Station
Salem, Massachusetts

This might be difficult to discern but molded into the concrete walls of each deck of the parking garage are the driving wheels, driving rods and pistons of an old time steam engine. Massachusetts requires that some from of art is designed into every new state construction. A round house and turntable once sat on this site before it became a commuter rail station. It's difficult to get a head on shot of this as there are trees directly across the tracks from the station.

12 Pics of Christmas #6 - Around the Christmas Tree

Image
Around the Christmas Tree
Salisbury, Massachusetts

This week's Sepia Saturday prompt features a child ready to blow out a candle on a Christmas tree. This is a photo and my sister Laurie and myself circa 1965. My mother always had to have a photo of us in front of the tree each year. This must have been Christmas Sunday as I have my red blazer only worn on Sundays. I loved the color red.

Great Uncle Sam

Image
In keeping with the Sepia Saturday prompt, pictured is the "thermometer" from a WWI Salem Red Cross Fund Drive. Uncle Sam is standing above the portal to the Boston & Maine Railroad tunnel that runs under Washington Street. Behind Uncle Sam is a switch tower archway to control the trains running on a single track under the city. In the background is the gothic style former passenger station. Trains would enter through the archway into a covered "shed" station. That station is since been demolished and has had three incarnations. The latest is an "intermodal" station with parking garage completed in 2015, is pictured below.

Posted for Sepia Saturday a weekly blog based on a "prompt" traditionally using, but not necessarily sepia or older photos. Click here for more fine "sepia" blog posts.

A Playground at the Beach

Image
The Sepia Saturday prompt shows several children playing a game at what looks like a park. Perhaps it's a playground? Well here's a playground at the beach!

It seems unusual to have a playground at the beach. Aren't the waves, sand and water enough to keep one occupied? I can remember this playground when I was a child. We took a June field trip from kindergarten to play here. The old playground still exists. It's been through a few modifications over the years, but it's still there entertaining thousands of children every summer.

The Shields Sisters

Image
Originally posted April 10, 2010.

These three young ladies are all sisters. I couldn't find a date of the photo but judging by the clothing I'm sure it's taken around the turn of the last century. From left to right are Elzena Rachel, Vallie, and Edith. Elzena Rachel would be my great-grandmother. Vallie and Edith would be my great aunts. My mother's middle name was Elzena. She didn't like her middle name and she seemed to get upset if we ever mentioned it. Of course we kids would never pass up a chance to tease mom but she took it well.

Don't you just love those outfits? They all have those cool little pocket books hanging from their belts. Vallie seems to have the slimmest waist, but you really can't tell about the waist lines of the two sitting sisters. I assume Vallie is wearing one of those torturous corsets popular at the time. The pattern of the material that makes up their blouses is so intricate. It looks as though Vallie and Edith's blouses are…
