Checkmated for a Kiss

This stereograph generates a lot of questions. First there is that amazing dress supported by what I assume is a hoop skirt. (I'm not an expert in such things.) Second we see a puppy resting beside the woman with the skirt. What is the relationship of the woman looking on? But what's with the kiss? Does the winner or loser of the chess match get a kiss? And who was the winner and who was the loser? This photo was obviously set up due to the limits of photographic equipment of the day, but if this were a candid shot I would sense someone set themselves up to be checkmated in order to get a kiss.

What are your thoughts?
