The Long Road Home

This week's Sepia Saturday prompt shows two women walking as they hold a portrait. Here we have a long road which many people have traveled on their final trip home.

This is the massive granite archway of the Oak Hill Cemetery in Newburyport, Massachusetts. As you can see by the lower photo shot two years ago it still stands. Under this arch many a soul and mourners have passed. They pass under an engraving over the arch which states, "Until the Day Break and the Shadows Flee Away." The arch was erected in 1863.

Oak Hill Cemetery is an example of a rural garden cemetery, created in 1831. Rural garden cemeteries were designed with many pathways and tree plantings. It is meant to be a place of enjoyment of the living as well as eternal rest for the deceased.
