The Lafayette Spoon

This week's Sepia Saturday prompt reminded me of a post card in my collection. It's actually an advertisement for a company called Towle Silversmiths. It shows a spoon they featured called the Lafayette spoon named for the french General of Revolutionary War fame. It shows a woman kissing a man as a refection on the spoon itself.

Towle Silversmiths was a mainstay in the city of Newburyport, Massachusetts from the 1800's to the 1990's. They made many famous patterns of silver. The company's name still lives on but manufacturing is done by other names.
The postcard was addressed to a Miss Sophia T. Anthony, 15 Bay St, New Bedford, Mass. Postmarked from Philadelphia PA. February 22, 1910 aT 1:30pm. Dear Sister Anthony: This sister appreciates your good will and because you feel she has been of some benefit is glad. She acknowledges the pleasure your valentine afforded her, also, tis cute. Here's to your future good fortune. Fraternally Yours, Sister Lucy G.B. Colby

Playground at the Beach

The Sepia Saturday prompt shows several children having fun hanging on a railing at what looks like a park. Perhaps it's a playground? Well here's a playground at the beach!
It seems unusual to have a playground at the beach. Aren't the waves, sand and water enough to keep one occupied? I can remember this playground when I was a child. We took a June field trip from kindergarten to play here. The old playground still exists. It's been through a few updates over the years but it's still there entertaining thousands of children every summer.
